We welcome and support applications from teachers who qualified outside Scotland.

We award GTCS registration, which is required to teach in Scotland. We do not award QTS or provide an assessment for QTS, which is required to teach in England and Wales.

If you would like to teach in Scottish schools, please choose the option that applies to you:

Qualified in United Kingdom (UK)


This option applies to you if you are qualified as a teacher elsewhere in the UK:

  • via a route other than PGCE (Postgraduate/Professional Certificate of Education)/BEd (Bachelor of Education) and/or
  • via PGCE / BEd and you are not registered with the appropriate body in that home nation (NCTL, EWC or GTCNI). If you have been registered with one of these bodies, please see the registration route below.

Qualified in United Kingdom (UK) and registered with another teacher body - Automatic Recognition


This option applies to you if :

  • you have been registered with the Teaching Regulation Agency in England (previously known as the National College for Teaching and Leadership and as the General Teaching Council for England); the Education Workforce Council in Wales (EWC); or the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) and
  • you are qualified as a teacher with an Initial Teacher Education degree (e.g. Bachelor of Education (BEd) or Postgraduate/Professional Certificate of Education (PGCE) in the UK.

Qualified in European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland


This option applies to you if :

  • you are from a European Union/ European Economic Area (EU/EEA) Member State or Switzerland and
  • you qualified as a teacher in another EU/EEA Member State or Switzerland

* If you hold Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) and qualified as a teacher in the EU/EEA, you need to select this option.

  • in a nation outside the UK, European Union/ European Economic Area (EU/EEA) or Switzerland.
